Chapter Eighteen

Lauren and Harper parted early Sunday morning, Harper off to Wilson and Lauren off to see her parents. Lauren’s parents lived on Pineview Drive over-looking the Chapman’s Mill Country Club ponds, in a very pretentious two point five million dollar monstrosity. Lauren admitted she enjoyed the money her parents and grandparents had bestowed on her, but it was the pompousness of the people her parents interacted with that made her sick.

“And the worst part about today is I have to tell my mother why Shelby isn’t with me,” Lauren said, over breakfast.

“Shelby went with you to your parents?” Harper asked.

Lauren sipped her coffee, “Shelby doesn’t have any family here. They all live far away and Shelby pretty much cut them off when her parents reacted badly to her being gay.”

“And your parents are okay with you being a lesbian?”

“Oh, not at first, but it became popular to have a lesbian daughter so my mother came around. Dad is so into himself, he doesn’t really care,” Lauren continued. “I don’t know how she’ll take the lesbian divorce.”

“Wait till you tell her about the new cowgirl from Oklahoma,” Harper said, kissing Lauren goodbye and rushing off. She had much further to go than Lauren and had to leave before her.

Grandma was in good spirits and health. Harper sat through church and lunch afterward, counting the minutes until she could go back home. She loved her grandmother, but she was unable to shake the need to be back in Lauren’s presence. She rushed through the visit as quickly as possible and actually beat Lauren back to the house. Lauren came home about thirty minutes after Harper. She changed clothes and joined Harper downstairs.

Lauren sat down in Harper’s lap on the couch. She laid her head on Harper’s shoulder and sighed deeply.

Harper hugged her tightly to her, “What’s the matter, baby?”

Lauren lay still for a moment then raised her head. She stood up suddenly and started pacing in front of Harper. Finally she said, “I am so mad at Shelby, I could kill her.”

Harper sat up, “Why, what did she do?”

“She went to see my mother. She told her about our break up and you.” Lauren was on a roll now, she continued pacing, “Of course she took no responsibility for our relationship falling apart and to top it all off she said and I quote, ‘She’s lost her mind and run off with a twenty-three year old grad student.’ I hate her.”

Harper stood up and stopped Lauren from pacing, “I take it your mother was not happy?”

“Oh, she was okay, by the time I left, though she’s still on Shelby’s side. I just didn’t want to discuss the reasons Shelby and I split up. Then I had to explain you and I wasn’t ready for that. It shocked me, that’s all,” Lauren said, falling into Harper’s chest.

Harper could only say, “I’m sorry.”

Lauren remained on Harper’s chest, but she wasn’t done, “Damn Shelby, I told you she could be a bitch.”

“Honey, she’s just grasping at straws.
